I don’t know if you are like me but one of the things I have struggled with in my life is loving myself. Yeah loving me. At times I have looked at it as being selfish and with that, I would totally abound self in pursuit of being there for everyone else around me except myself.
With time, however, I have come to learn that as I’m in pursuit of keeping others happy and feeling loved,I would be giving others the very things I need. Worst still, if they seem not to return the favour let’s just say they awaken the dormant ‘LAVA’ in my mountain of life.
So I started examining my life and what makes me frustrated, and I realize I had too much expectation to receive love from outside while denying myself or Love. While doing this examination I realized an important formula to remedy my state.
Mathew 22:36-40. 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
My light bulb came when I understood that if my heart, mind and soul are in the business of loving God then it will translate in loving my neighbour as myself. I.e. I love God then I receive love from him as he shines his truth in my life which will allow me to love myself through the truth revealed by the love of God, therefore, extending the same to my neighbour.
So loving self through the loving truth of God is not selfish it actually enables me to embrace self and thus allows me, room to embrace others and extend Gods love to them.
In conclusion, learn to love your neighbour as yourself; as you seek the best and higher good for yourself through loving God with who you are total; it extends extend that to others by the grace of God.
