THE JOURNEY : MENTAL PRISON

What comes to mind when you think about life in prison?

Stories

What comes to mind when you think about life in prison? The first thing that comes to my mind is ….no freedom. May be at this point you are asking yourself okay, why are we talking about life in prison?. Recently I had the opportunity to visit inmates through a mission organized by TWR Kenya together with its partners.

The atmosphere changes drastically as one walks inside the prison compound. In prison one has to play by the rules. Schedule and routine. Being a person who loves to be spontaneous and random, I can only imagine how draining that type of life would be to me; emotionally, physically and mentally. No random moments such as going out for a walk, meeting friends or just staying in bed... the honest truth is that at times we are in prison. Physically free but mentally confined. This thought came after listening to Pastor Juma as he shared his sermon with the inmates at the prison.

It got me asking myself, ‘why be a mental slave yet Christ came to set us free, to be free indeed.

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

We need to renew our mind because we are new babes in Christ as found in 1st Peter chapter 2. If we have accepted Christ in our lives; then we are born again; no longer in bondage of sin but restored to God by Christ through salvation. Therefore, we can’t afford to think the old way; we have to be liberated and learn to understand the pleasing and perfect will of God.

How do we renew our minds? We are able to renew our mind by being doers of the word and not only hearing the word. Using the word as a mirror. Not only looking at ourselves through its lenses but also making significant change in our lives through it by the grace of God.

Proverbs 23 reminds us that as a man thinks in his heart so is he…it’s therefore our responsibility to work on our thinking. Renewing our mind by the power of the word of God, through Christ Jesus and by His Holy Spirit.

May we allow the freedom of Christ to reign in our life. He paid the ultimate price. That we may walk in freedom.
